AI Agent

A WhatsApp chatbot that understands intent in natural language, learns from your business data, and takes real actions through APIs — without keywords, scripts, or a single line of code.

STEP-BY-STEP

How To Build an AI Agent in AiSensy

Follow these steps to get started

Sign Up to AiSensy

Add your Website and a Test Number

Paste your website link and the WhatsApp number you want to test on, then click Train Agent. AiSensy reads your website for you and builds a first version of your agent automatically.

Your Agent Goes Live on your Test Number

Right away, your agent starts replying on that test number. It keeps reading your website in the background and gets smarter on its own — no waiting around.

Choose What Your Agent Should Do

Turn on the pre-built capabilities you want your agent to have, like answering FAQs or passing a chat to a human. Don't overthink it: you can change everything later.

Add a Few Ground Rules (Optional)

These are things your agent should always follow, like "never promise same-day delivery" or "don't make up prices." Skip it if you're not sure — you can add them later.

Fill in your Business Profile

Give your agent a name, a short description of what your business does, and a greeting message customers see first (like "Hi! Welcome to Tonkers Corner, how can I help?"). AiSensy drafts the description for you from your website: just check it and tweak.

Choose How it Sounds

Pick a voice: Friendly, Professional, Concise, or Playful. Choose the response length. Not sure? Go with Friendly and Medium. That works for most businesses.

Add Skills to Your AI Agent (Optional)

Skills define the specific jobs your AI Agent can perform.

For example, you can create Skills for:

  • Answering FAQs

  • Qualifying leads

  • Booking appointments

  • Handling bulk or wholesale enquiries

  • Collecting feedback

A few pre-built Skills are already available inside AiSensy for reference. Pick a ready-to-use one or describe your own in plain words and let AiSensy draft it. You can skip this and still have a working agent.

Feed it your Knowledge (the important one)

Knowledge is the business information your AI Agent uses to answer customer questions.

This is one of the most important parts of the setup. If your Knowledge is incomplete, unclear or outdated, the agent’s answers may also be incomplete or incorrect.

Add your info three easy ways: paste a webpage link, upload files (PDF, Word, etc.), or type text directly.

Add Actions (Optional)

Actions allow the AI Agent to do more than answer questions. They help it update contact information, search Knowledge, transfer a conversation or call an external API. In another words, it connects your agent to the outside world.

You will see three types of Actions:

  • System Actions

  • Business Actions

  • Custom API Actions

Step11-add-actions.webp

Set a Fallback Message and Test Numbers

Write a friendly message for when your agent doesn't know the answer (like "I'm not sure about that — want me to connect you with our team?"). Then add up to 3 test numbers so you can try it out privately.

Step12-fallback-message.webp

Test it Like a Real Customer

Chat with your agent right inside the builder. Ask real questions, throw in typos, try different wording, even other languages. Make sure the answers feel right before anyone else sees it.

Train, Test, and Go Live

Use the "Train your agent" panel on the right to chat with your agent using free test messages, without touching your live quota. Try the questions real customers would actually ask, across every skill you've added, and fix anything that feels off.

Once you're happy with how it responds, toggle AI on and click Go Live. Your agent starts replying to real customers on WhatsApp immediately.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions answered

Q. How long does it take to set up an AI Agent?

A basic setup — Business Profile, Voice, one or two skills, and a Knowledge source — usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. Since your agent is live from the moment you sign up, there's no waiting period before you can start testing.

Q. What language does the AI agent respond in?

Right now the AI agent responds in English only. However, it can understand queries in any language as long as you've added that context to your Knowledge Base. So if a customer types in Hindi or Spanish, the agent will understand the intent and reply back in English. Full multi-language response support is coming very soon.

Q. Can the AI agent send images or media?

By default, the AI responds in plain text. However, if you've set up Tool Calling and configured a media message type, the agent can reply with images or media for those specific tool responses.

Q. Can the AI agent and keyword chatbots run together?

Yes. They coexist. AI Routing decides which one handles each incoming message based on the context of the query.

Q. Do I get free messages to test before going live?

Yes — you get 500 free AI messages for testing. You can add up to 3 numbers and test the bot thoroughly on WhatsApp before turning it on for your customers.

Q. Can I test the AI agent on a free plan?

Yes, you can. However, to test it on an actual WhatsApp number, you need the WhatsApp API connected. Without that, you can still test the agent directly inside the Agent Builder itself — you just won't see it on WhatsApp until your API number is set up.

Q. Can the AI agent remember what a customer said in a previous conversation?

No. The AI agent works within a single session. Once the conversation ends, it starts fresh the next time the customer messages. It does not retain memory across sessions, so if a customer messaged you last week, the agent has no context of that when they come back.

Q. My bot gave a wrong answer. What do I do?

Add or correct the relevant information in your Knowledge base, since that's usually where the gap is. If the issue was tone or instructions rather than facts, adjust Business Profile or Voice instead. Retest the exact question in the Train panel before publishing, so you can confirm the fix before it reaches real customers.

Q. Can I turn the AI agent off and go back to just keyword chatbots?

Yes, completely. You can toggle the AI agent off anytime and your keyword chatbots will take over. Nothing breaks, nothing gets deleted. You're always in control.

Q. Does the AI agent work 24/7?

Yes, that's the whole point. Once it's live, it responds to customer queries round the clock without any intervention from your team.

Q. My website gets updated regularly. Do I need to manually re-sync the Knowledge Base every time?

Yes, for now you'll need to manually re-sync when there are significant changes. The agent doesn't auto-detect website updates. Make it a habit to re-sync whenever there's a meaningful change — new product, updated pricing, changed policy — anything the agent might be asked about.

Q. What if a customer asks something completely random or off-topic?

If your agent can't find a relevant answer in your knowledge base or skills, it sends your fallback message instead of guessing. You can also set escalate_to_human to step in for queries that fall outside what your agent is meant to handle.

Q. Do I need to build a separate agent for each use case?

No. One Chat agent handles every use case through Skills. Add lead qualification, support, and appointment booking as separate skills on the same agent, rather than building and maintaining multiple bots.

Q. Do I need a developer to set this up?

No. The entire setup is done through a UI with no coding required. To connect with other tools, you will need an API endpoint from your developer or your platform, but the configuration inside AiSensy is no-code.

Q. Will the AI agent work if my customer sends a voice note?

Not as of now. We will update the description of this tutorial once voice note support is added to our WhatsApp AI Agents, so make sure to check the description of this video.

Q. What if a customer is being abusive or spamming the bot?

Turn on Hand off to a human in Settings so those conversations get routed to your team instead of the agent handling them alone. From there, you can manage or block the contact directly from the Contacts section of your dashboard.
